My Ex-Husband Brought His 25-Year-Old Mistress to Our Son’s Pool Party and Called Me a Washed-Up Single Mother. Then He Laughed at the Handsome Man Beside Me, Certain I Had Hired a Fake Boyfriend to Impress Everyone. I Stayed Silent Until My “Date” Pulled a Black Velvet Box From His Jacket and Said, “Luke, I Brought This for You.” “This is pathetic!” Luke’s laugh exploded across our son’s pool party before I had even made it ten feet onto the patio. My ex-husband stood beside the outdoor bar with a glass of scotch in his hand and Camellia, the twenty-five-year-old former secretary he had left me for six months earlier, leaning against the counter beside him. Around us, neighbors and parents in summer clothes turned toward the commotion while children splashed happily in the pool, completely unaware that Luke had decided to turn their afternoon into my public humiliation. His eyes traveled slowly over Daniel, the tall, broad-shouldered man whose arm was linked through mine. Luke grinned. “Seriously, Clover?” he said loudly. “Who did you hire? Some bargain actor from a talent agency?” My stomach tightened. A few people looked down at their drinks. Luke wasn’t finished. “A guy like that would never actually choose you,” he continued. “You’re a divorced mother with a baby. Have you looked in a mirror lately?” The patio went painfully quiet. Six months earlier, Luke had walked away from me and our newborn son for Camellia. During the ugliest months of postpartum recovery, he had repeatedly told me I had become boring, exhausted, difficult, and undesirable while he paraded his new life around as though abandoning us had somehow been an achievement. I had spent too many nights believing him. So when he laughed at me in front of everyone, some old wound inside me opened again. My face burned. For one terrible second, I wished I had never brought Daniel. Because Luke was partly right about one thing. Daniel wasn’t really my boyfriend. I had hired him. But Luke had no idea why. Camellia lifted her champagne flute and smiled at me with carefully practiced sympathy. “Oh, Luke,” she murmured, though she was clearly enjoying every second. Daniel’s hand remained steady around mine. He didn’t look embarrassed. He didn’t laugh nervously or step away from the confrontation. Instead, the friendly expression he had worn when we arrived disappeared. Something colder replaced it. He turned toward Luke with the calm, measured look of a man studying a problem he had already seen before. “Actually, Luke,” Daniel said, “I’ve been looking forward to meeting you all afternoon.” Luke’s grin weakened. “What the hell does that mean?” I looked at Daniel. For weeks, he had been careful with me. He had explained exactly what he needed me to do that afternoon: arrive naturally, let Luke behave however he chose, and most importantly, do not warn him. Even then, I hadn’t known precisely what Daniel planned to say. Luke laughed again, but there was less confidence in it. “You know what? This is even sadder than I thought. Clover hired an actor who memorized my name.” Daniel released my hand. Then he reached inside his tailored navy jacket. Camellia’s smile vanished. He pulled out a small black velvet box. Luke stared at it. “What’s that?” Daniel held it toward him. “I brought you something.” A nervous chuckle rippled through two men near the grill, but Luke immediately seemed encouraged by it. He rolled his eyes. “What is this supposed to be? A consolation prize?” “Open it.” Luke snatched the box. I watched his fingers flip the lid. Then everything about him changed. The color disappeared from his face. Not gradually. Instantly. His mouth opened, but no sound came out at first. Then a broken gasp tore from his throat. The velvet box slipped through his fingers and struck the stone patio with a sharp crack. Camellia jumped. “Luke?” He didn’t answer her. He was staring at what had fallen onto the limestone between his expensive loafers. It wasn’t jewelry. It was a custom gold flash drive. Luke looked from the drive to Daniel. Then to me. His hand began trembling. “What is this?” Daniel bent down, picked up the drive, and calmly dusted it against his sleeve. For the first time that afternoon, Luke looked afraid. I had seen him angry before. I had seen him manipulative, smug, defensive, and cruel. But fear was different. Fear made him forget the audience. “Clover,” he said sharply, “what did you do?” The strange thing was that six months earlier, I wouldn’t have known how to answer that question. When Luke left, I was barely sleeping. I was caring for our newborn while trying to understand how the husband who once promised me forever had moved into another relationship almost overnight. Then the divorce paperwork arrived. Luke expected me to sign quickly. He called it “clean.” “Simple.” “Fair.” At first, I almost believed him. Then I noticed numbers that didn’t match. Nothing dramatic. Tiny discrepancies. Stock disclosures that seemed slightly different from financial statements I remembered seeing while we were married. A severance declaration that didn’t align with what Luke had once bragged about receiving. At two in the morning, with our son asleep against my chest, I stared at those documents until one thought became impossible to ignore. Something was missing. I didn’t confront Luke. I hired someone. That someone was standing beside me now. Luke pointed at Daniel. “Who are you?” Daniel studied him. “I told you,” Luke snapped. “Who are you really?” Daniel glanced briefly toward me. I said nothing. I had promised myself I would let him answer. “My name is Daniel Reed.” Luke’s eyes narrowed. That name clearly meant nothing to him. Not yet. Daniel continued. “And no, Clover didn’t hire me from an acting agency.” The backyard seemed to shrink around us. Even the soft bubbling of the pool jets suddenly sounded loud. Camellia lowered her champagne flute. Daniel turned the flash drive between his fingers. “Clover contacted my firm after the divorce was finalized.” Luke blinked. “My firm?” He tried to laugh again. It came out thin and strained. “What firm?” Daniel looked directly into his eyes. “A litigation and forensic auditing firm.” Luke stopped moving. Camellia slowly turned toward him. I watched something pass across her face. Confusion first. Then suspicion. Luke recovered quickly. “This is ridiculous. Clover found some accountant because she’s bitter about the divorce?” Daniel didn’t react. “She hired us because certain disclosures didn’t reconcile.” Luke’s jaw tightened. “What disclosures?” “Executive compensation. Stock options. Severance reporting.” Luke’s hand moved toward his pocket. Daniel noticed. So did I. “Don’t worry,” I said quietly. “Your phone can wait.” It sounded like an ordinary sentence. But Luke looked at me differently after I said it. Because the man who had spent months convincing me I understood nothing about his finances suddenly realized I knew exactly which records Daniel was talking about. Camellia stepped away from him. “Luke?” He ignored her. “This is harassment,” he said. “You can’t show up at my son’s party with some accountant and threaten me.” “Nobody threatened you,” Daniel replied. Then he looked at the gold flash drive. Luke followed his eyes. “What’s on that?” Daniel didn’t answer immediately. And for perhaps the first time since I met him, Luke seemed desperate for someone else to speak. He looked at me. “Clover.” I remembered every night he had called me unstable. Every time he had told me the divorce was generous. Every time he insisted Camellia had nothing to do with our finances. I didn’t rescue him. Daniel stepped closer. “We started with your divorce disclosures.” Luke swallowed. “And?” “We found something else.” A bead of sweat moved down Luke’s temple despite the breeze coming off the pool. Camellia whispered, “What did you find?” Daniel looked at her, then back at Luke. “The question isn’t what Clover found in the divorce.” He held up the flash drive. “It’s where your money went after it disappeared.” Luke’s glass slipped slightly in his hand. And before Daniel named the account, the property, or the amount involved, Luke suddenly looked toward Camellia. That one terrified glance told me the missing money wasn’t the only secret between them.
